Fosfomycin – a proven treatment of cystitis

Autumn coolness can lead to cystitis – an inflammation of the urinary bladder caused by bacteria. The main symptoms of cystitis include dysuria, a strong, persistent urge to urinate, bladder or pelvic pain.

According to statistics, urinary tract infections (UTIs) affect nearly half of all women at least once in their lives, with almost a quarter of them experiencing the same episode afterward. Such a high incidence is associated with the anatomical structure of the urethra: the female urethra is shorter and wider than in males, so it is easier for infections to enter the bladder.

According to the European Association of Urology (EAU) guideline 2019, fosfomycin given in a single oral dose of 3 g is recommended as the first-line agent for the treatment of UTIs and it is included to international treatment guidelines with a high recommendation strength.

Fosfomycin has a broad spectrum of activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, such as : E. Coli (75-90%), Citrobacter spp., Klebsiella spp., Proteus spp., Serratia spp., P. aeruginosa and Enterococcus faecalis, even if they are resistant to other antibacterial agents.

Among the advantages of fosfomycin:

  • significant antimicrobial activity against probable causative agents of cystitis;
  • a unique mechanism of action that distinguishes it from other inhibitors of bacterial cell wall synthesis and minimizes the likelihood of developing resistance;
  • high safety profile;
  • pharmacokinetic properties (the formation of a high concentration in the urine, which persists for a long time after a single oral dose);
  • reasonable price for the drug.

Since 2020, Astrapharm has been releasing fosfomycin in sachets each containing 3 g of the active ingredient on the Ukrainian pharmaceutical market.

Fosfomycin trometamol of Fosfomycin-Astrapharm is currently the most bioavailable among all fosfomycin compounds, which directly impacts the effectiveness of treatment.

The drug is dispensed on prescription only.
