Counteracting herpes viruses – Acyclovir-Astrapharm

The cool autumn weather often provokes an exacerbation of herpes infections (1). Skin lesions, itching, burning and pain all negatively affect daily activities and reduce a person’s quality of life.

However, Astrapharm has already taken care of such patients and has launched an antiviral drug on the pharmaceutical market that helps to ease the symptoms of the disease.

Acyclovir-Astrapharm is a synthetic analog of a purine nucleoside with inhibitory activity against viruses of the herpesvirus family (Herpesviridae). It includes herpes simplex virus types I and II, varicella and herpes zoster virus, Epstein-Barr virus, and cytomegalovirus.

Acyclovir, a component of Acyclovir-Astrapharm, is converted by thymidine kinase enzyme into acyclovir triphosphate, which interacts with viral DNA polymerase and stops the synthesis of the viral DNA chain. This mechanism of action prevents the formation of new rashes, accelerates crust formation, and reduces pain and the likelihood of cutaneous dissemination and visceral complications.

Treatment of viral infections of the skin and other mucous membranes caused by herpes simplex virus should be started as soon as possible after the onset of the disease. The result will be better if treatment is started as soon as a lesion appears.

Adequate hydration of the body should be maintained if high doses of acyclovir are used.

Acyclovir Astrapharm is available in the form of tablets containing 200 mg of acyclovir.

The drug is prescription and should only prescribed by a doctor.
